Publication Design

As a leader and supporter of the state’s rice growers, California Rice Commission (CRC) has represented the rice industry and its evolving story for generations. Not only are they concerned with the production of rice but also the wildlife affected by ricelands and wetlands throughout various parts of California. CRC promotes news regarding rice growers and their conservation efforts through multiple environmental programs.

After CRC partnered with biologists at Point Blue Conservation Science to conduct a study on the vital role of rice and its “footprint” on the surrounding ecosystem, they needed the impactful data consolidated into a comprehensive report to be shared amongst the grower community and beyond.

The Goal

Not only did this report need to effectively highlight the key takeaways from the research but also organize the information in an intuitive and inviting manner. The focus drew from the different species that live around ricelands and wetlands, varying depending on seasonal and monthly cycles. This highly complex study needed to be communicated through detailed maps, charts, and graphics to effectively illustrate the impact on wildlife.

Visual approaches to the informative graphics were brainstormed, including how to emphasize and showcase different wildlife throughout the publication. The design needed to be timeless and easy to understand for those not directly involved with the subject matter. Combined with CRC’s established brand, we looked at magazines, posters, and advertisements that focused on animals and wildlife for inspiration to cultivate concepts for the front cover.

COVER CONCEPTS

The Solution

The cover of the report features different animals that reflect the season in which they are most active in the denoted regions of California. The usage of soft light photography creates a dynamic backdrop for the wildlife to be framed within, even breaking out of those parameters in certain instances. Icons from CRC’s brand are integrated throughout to call attention to compelling statistics and vital information. Rich color tones are used to organize the sections of the research report and call back to each seasonal cycle. Maps and graphics utilize both imagery and icons to portray how the rice footprint impacts wildlife conservation. This detailed guide efficiently consolidates CRC’s research study into a report that will be referred to for many years to come.
